Bad You or Bad Me?

Hi! If you like this post, please share it with others or subscribe to my full RSS feed. Thank you! :)

It will never cease to amaze me how thirsty people are for things like honesty, compassion and equanimity. Nothing new, it is natural for us to search for something bigger in life which will give us meaning and a reason to live. What interests me, however, is that at times like these we search for meaning in the most unnatural places imaginable.
One of the reasons why I like to criticize the mass media so much, is because everything in it looks so one sided and distinguishable (especially on television). I would say that I have spent time watching TV just as much as most people have — it is a great way to observe today’s society, because everything is just so targeted. If it is on TV then you know that there is a substantial demand for it and people are willing to dedicate their time to watch it. All of those commercials for hair loss, weight loss and enhancement pills are there because people want it. The same could be said about reality and talk shows.
Are the people in front of the cameras talking to a piece of metal, or to other human beings? It is a fascinating thing. Everything is so strictly directed, rehearsed and dramatized that I am amazed how anyone would think that any the stuff that they see on TV is real.

Have you seen one of those green screens that they use to explain the forecast? It is such a trip. We are so detached from our roots that we need a high tech, digital representation of land, wind and soil in order to understand the vary factors that made it possible for us to be here in the first place! There will be a time, when we will have to beg for a real picture of what it was outside, because all that we have as a memory will be a digital sun. I hope not though, because that just sounds depressing.
I don’t believe that any of this is real. I think that the sole fact that cameras are involved, makes it not genuine and complete garbage. I would even go further and question the existence of the people on TV, because as far as I am concerned they are not real. But still, I watch and amuse myself. I watch as you watch. I am a rating. Bad you or bad me?
I have seen many older people taking what they see on TV way too seriously to the point that it repels them. Most of the time I would want to sit and explain to them that it is all a farce, none of it is real. Then I realize that they have lived in a world that is much more open than ours. Not having television, Internet and cell phones has been a blessing to them, because they have felt more feelings that we will ever feel from our couch. And now they have this all-in-one object that attempts to attract their attention. They don’t know what marketing is and how what they see has been paid for over and over again in advance.
But we have adapted to it. We are always ready to explain to them the things that we grew up with. We are proud of those things, because they constitute our being in many ways. We are high tech, fastest connected and ready to charge.
I think that those old folks have it right after all. I don’t think that there is any meaning in anything that can be downloaded, ordered or booked. Don’t get me wrong, I still do all of those things, but I know that the meaning that I am going to discover for myself, could be obtained without those things. To put it in other words, even though the scenery could change immensely over the years it is my physical contact with the world and with myself that will give meaning, the rest is just filler and amusement.

  1. For nine years I was a librarian/media specialist in an elementary school and I used to produce a monthly children’s live closed circuit TV show where the kids filmed, edited, and did a live news report. I watched tons of TV to get ideas and we had a lot of fun. Now that I’m no longer doing that, I have become totally bored with TV except for watching Law and Order and Charmed. I find it much more interesting to read blogs like yours and to take still photography, paint and play music. I still film the occasional wedding when asked.

It is kind of ironic that I found your site today with the above quote, and just updated my site http://www.oregoncoastescapes.com .
It is a video site of the Oregon Coast to help people relax and enjoy our natural beauty from afar. The very thing you state in your post is almost the exact opposite of what I am doing with this site as I try to keep it as “unretouched” as possible.

    Enjoy
