Deep Song Lyrics at Midnight

Hi! If you like this post, please share it with others or subscribe to my full RSS feed. Thank you! :)

Joy DivisionI think it’s about time for me to share my taste in music. The first thing that you will notice is that I rarely listen to music just to hop around…or to grind with someone’s daughter for that matter. I mostly want it to be an enlightening experience, which would help me see things from a different perspective. This is not to say that I only enjoy moody, depressing, melancholic songs. Come to think of it, I might as well say that. Anyways, I won’t really get into that mainstream/underground debate, I just like when music makes me think, that’s all. As much as I hate categorizations I must say that I mostly enjoy alternative rock and hip-hop. I also know that songs that are deep for me might seem stupid for someone else and that it’s all relative. One more thing, if I like a band I will make sure that I gather all possible information about it, so I might seem a little but fanatic at some points.

The first song that I am going to mention is called “New Dawn Fades” by Joy Division. They are one of the bands that I really, really admire, so I would love it if I have introduced you to them for the first time. I seldom use the word “beautiful,” but that’s the only way that I can describe their songs. All of them were written by Ian Curtis, who was a simply a genius. Those are the lyrics of “New Dawn Fades” :

“A change of speed, a change of style
A change of scene, with no regrets
A chance to watch, admire the distance
Still occupied, though you forget
Different colours, different shades
Over each mistakes were made
I took the blame
Directionless so plain to see
A loaded gun won’t set you free
So you say

We’ll share a drink and step outside
An angry voice and one who cried
‘We’ll give you everything and more
The strain’s too much, can’t take much more’
Oh, I’ve walked on water, run through fire
Can’t seem to feel it anymore
It was me, waiting for me
Hoping for something more
Me, seeing me this time, hoping for something else”

Although the lyrics are phenomenal to begin with, the way that Curtis expresses his feelings just makes you play that song over and over again. How can I listen to something on the radio, when Joy Division’s songs have so much passion in them? It is funny how today you have songs that are so painfully categorized — this song is going to be for a break-up, this one is for regret, this one is a party song.

“Enough of that” (I say)

I want lyrics like those who can take me wherever I want to go. They are truly universal and will be around for many bad generations to come. They will outlive me, this site, even this city. The good part is they exist and can guide us as we make sense of the absurdities that we surround ourselves with.

I have enjoyed discovering Joy Division on my own, so I am going to let you do the same thing if you’ve just heard about them. The nice thing is that there is a movie called “Control,” which is about Ian Curtis. It came out last year and I recommend it. I would be glad to know what you think about this song and JD in general.

  4. @ ranjeet - exactly, that’s the culmination of the song and Ian’s voice is so haunting when he sings that. That’s my favorite part as well. I am glad you liked it.

@ Dr. KC - Thank you so much. I enjoyed your article and will register on the networking site. Isn’t it amazing how one song can provoke so many different feelings? I also view music as therapeutic, and as somewhat of a healing process.
